About Armitage Hill Villa!
Armitage Hill villa Galle has a 200-year history and has featured in numerous guide books to Sri Lanka. The original plantation home has had a number of notable and notorious occupants. For a period (1840-1880) it was owned by the Ephraim family who was the proprietors of the New Oriental Hotel, now Amangalla.
The property’s subsequent development over the past 30 years by architect Kerry Hill forms part of an important architectural legacy. It has been written about extensively in architectural books and publications, and regularly hosts visiting architects and university students. It is a serene secluded sanctuary set on 20 acres, only 7.5kms from the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort and just a short drive to beautiful white-sand beaches.
โ
Built as a collection of separate pavilion buildings centered around the original plantation house built in 1820 – forming a compound of five very separate bedrooms with en-suites, numerous large living, and communal areas, courtyards, a dining pavilion designed to comfortably seat 20 guests, a 70ft pool and large pool pavilion plus kitchen and separate staff buildings. All buildings are set high up on a hill, overlooking vast flood plains with views to Adam’s Peak from the verandah of the main house to the North and the winding river Gin to the South.
About the location
Galle is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the southwestern tip, 119 km from Colombo and the administrative capital of Southern Province, Sri Lanka and is the district capital of Galle District. Galle in the 16th century was the main port on the island and it is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in the whole South and Southeast Asia, displaying the interaction between Portuguese architectural styles and native traditions.
The city was extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century. The Galle Fort is a world heritage site and is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. The fort is surrounded on three sides by the ocean and this supplies it with stunning views. Galle is a true gem and a Unesco World Heritage Site. This historic city is a delight to explore on foot, an endlessly exotic old trading port blessed with imposing Dutch-colonial buildings, ancient mosques and churches, grand mansions and museums that exhale a retro atmosphere with an aristocratic scent. Wandering its rambling streets you’ll pass stylish cafes and boutiques and impeccably restored hotels mostly owned by local and foreign artists, writers, photographers and designers that took great care to maintain their initial glamor and sparkle. For all the above reasons, most travelers are utterly seduced by Galle’s ambiance, and it’s undoubtedly southern Sri Lanka is a place not to be missed.
South Coast of Sri Lanka will be a highlight of your trip with the breathtaking beaches, wonderful scenery and amazing villas, South Coast or else South of Paradise is the ideal destination for those seeking carefree holidays next to the beach.
Sri Lanka’s sandy beaches, splendid tropical climate, and delicious cuisine are only some of the many reasons you should visit this Asian country. The other name of the country is โpearl of the Indian oceanโ and yes we can say that Sri Lanka is surely one of the most beautiful pearls. If you want to learn more about the history of the place, its local culture, practice some watersport, and view the wildlife, Sri Lanka is an ideal destination that you will never forget!
